The Navigation Shield, or NavShield is a two day bush navigation event conducted annually by the Bushwalkers Wilderness Rescue Squad, with a Saturday only option. The event is open to a range of competitors, including rescue organisations. There are 1 and 2 day options. This is the 25th NavShield, and will be held on 6th & 7th July. It is within 3 hours, roughly north-west of Sydney. WICEN are again looking for members to work at Base, up to 3 Radio Checkpoints, and a Repeater Site.
Kevin Dawson VK2CKD is seeking a number of keen bushwalkers to join him in entering the NavShield as a competitor for the one day event. It would be possible to compete on the Saturday and join the WICEN operation on the Sunday. For information about the event itself, go to http://www.bwrs.org.au/and click NavShield. If you are interested in competing, please contact WICEN promptly.
NSW Police Search and Rescue are looking at all of the details of the original search for the Cessna 210 VH-MDX which was lost in the Barrington Tops in 1981, to assist in planning for this year's SAREX in October. They would be assisted by any listener who has knowledge WICEN's involvement in this original search.
WICEN's Monday night HF net is now once per month. This will be the second Monday of each month at 8:00 pm. The group has started a 2m digital net via the Chatswood repeater at 7:30 pm on the 4th Wednesday of each month. Initially they will be using MT63-2k-long, available in the Fldigi [F L digi] suite of software. It can be downloaded from: www.w1hkj.com
This year's Trek for Timor will be in and around the Kangaroo Valley on Saturday the 21st of September. Funds raised will allow solar powered lights to be installed in 1024 homes in the Remexio district. These will allow children to study at night, and improve health, as they replace polluting kerosene lamps. The project will also train over 30 local young people in installing and maintaining the systems. There are 11 and 50km options, with the 11km minor Trek covering the last section of the walk, rather than the steep climb of the first section. If you have a group which is interested in participating, visit: http://www.kvrp.org.au/
The Bushwalker's Wildernes Rescue Squad will be providing a two weekend Remote Area First Aid Course on 12th and13th of October, concluding on the 26th and 27th. These courses include the competencies required for workplace first aid. A Recertification course is being conducted on 7th and 8th of September.
Please note, that with the exception of Publicity related items, it is best to reply to the appropriate person within WICEN, rather than to reply to the publicity officer. The contact form on the website is a great way to do this
