The world famous Shazada Horse Endurance Ride, or Enduro, will be held again this year at St Albans, from Monday 26 August to Sunday 1 September. It is run as loops out of the small village of St Albans to the north of Sydney - or west of the Central Coast. This is a rugged and remote area, and presents many communications challenges.
WICEN is once again supporting the SAREX Search and Rescue EXercise run buy NSW Police Search and Rescue and the Bushwalker's Wilderness Rescue Squad on Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th of October in the Barrington Tops. It is built around the search for the Cessna 210 VH-MDX which was lost there in 1981. Police records indicate that WICEN was involved in the original search, and, as such, planning would be assisted by any listener who has knowledge WICEN's involvement in this original search, even if it is just a name of those taking part.
The 2013 Hunter Memory Walk and Jog will be held at Speers Point Park on Sunday 8 September. This is beside Lake Macquarie. It will raise funds for The Hunter Dementia Memory Resource Centre through Alzheimer's Australia NSW. The Illawarra event will be held at Stuart Park, North Wollongong on Sunday 13 October.
This year's Trek for Timor will be in and around the Kangaroo Valley on Saturday the 21st of September. Funds raised will allow solar powered lights to be installed in 1024 homes in the Remexio district. These will allow children to study at night, and improve health, as they replace polluting kerosene lamps. The project will also train over 30 local young people in installing and maintaining the systems. There are 11 and 50km options, with the 11km minor Trek covering the last section of the walk, rather than the steep climb of the first section. The Bushwalker's Wildernes Rescue Squad will be providing a two weekend Remote Area First Aid Course on 12th and 13th of October, concluding on the 26th and 27th. These courses include the competencies required for workplace first aid. A Recertification course is being conducted on 7th and 8th of September.
Steven VK2BOS has advised he is ceasing the Digital Nets, but has hinted at other activities.
